Cyclists’ one-two finish
GLADSTONE'S Matt and Kate Jenkin had cycling success at the Queensland Criterion Titles in Brisbane.
The pair, who joined locals Mick and Katrina Newell and Paul Andrew, tackled the tough Brisbane street circuit with gusto and came up trumps.
Kate was placed second in the 25 to 40-year master's age division while husband Matt was first in the masters five category for the 50 to 55-year group.
"It was a pretty fast circuit and it suited the sprinters like me," Matt said.
While Mick and Katrina Newell and Andrews finished back in the back, Matt added that his wife's achievement was exceptional.
"Kate was very pleased and just six months ago, I carried Kate out of her car because she had a blown disc in her back and she didn't know how she did it," Matt said.
"She started training since January 1 with lots of core work to get her back stabilised."
The event featured approximately 400 to 500 cyclists and Matt said the Gladstone riders are more than matching it with those from Rockhampton.
"We are just smashing riders from Rockhampton," Matt said with a smile and adding to the sporting rivalry between Gladstone and Rockhampton.
The local cyclists' next mission is the Metro Championships in Brisbane in five weeks.
