Watch: Cyclist hit from behind

Cyclist victim shamed over crash footage

SHOCKING footage of a bike rider being cleaned up by a car in Brisbane's east highlights just how vulnerable cyclists are on the roads.

Cyclist Geoffrey James was riding outbound on Wynnum Rd on his way to work in September when a motorist knocked him off.

He suffered a series of injuries but is back in the saddle saying 95 per cent of motorists give riders room if cyclists show them the same respect on the road.

But the video - which was watched more than 50,000 times in less than two hours when The Courier-Mail posted it online - has also become the focus of an outpouring of comments against cyclists.

Mr James, 36, said he was riding to work when the car behind him slammed into him, the driver blinded by the sun.

He said he had been riding legally on the road, and had a flashing light mounted as part of the video camera that recorded the crash.

The road was the safest place to be because the footpath was too narrow and used by the elderly, he said. His bike was written off but the crash could have been much worse. He urged motorists to drive with more care.

"The roads aren't just for cars, they are for everybody," the warehouse worker from Kangaroo Point said.

"Respect us, we are another road user. We have the same rights to be on the road as you."
