Customs officials seize 19,000 cigarettes

IT IS an illegal haul big enough to keep a pack-a-day smoker sated for more than two years.

Customs officers at Sydney Airport have seized more than 19,000 cigarettes - the equivalent of 760 packs - from a 56-year-old Bangladeshi man who arrived on a flight from Thailand earlier this week.

Aside from the massive haul of cigarettes, he was also attempting to bring in 25kg of tobacco.

Although legal to import, tobacco must be declared at the border and duties paid.

Both the cigarettes and tobacco have now been seized.

The man faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison or a fine equivalent to five-times the evaded tax.
