CrossFit fever takes off in Gladstone
CROSSFIT can be summed up in six words: functional movements, constantly varied, high intensity.
That's what CrossFit Gladstone head coach and owner Sean O'Neill says.
The unique activity has taken off in Gladstone with the purpose-built gym on Chapple St getting about 70-80 people per day through the door. and running six days a week to keep up with the demand.
Gladstone CrossFit opened on March 26, so it's a reasonably new concept here.
One of the main misconceptions is CrossFit is just for the elite or advanced athlete.
"CrossFit is more about having a tight-knit community...you don't have to be the best athlete in the world.
"If you follow the CrossFit philosophy you will get results," Mr O'Neill said.
The gym in Gladstone is filled with bars, kettlebells, pull up bars and everything else a CrossFitter would use and there is a local competition squad of around 30 people.
CrossFit Gladstone has two teams in the Again Faster Allstar Elite Team Series and a team in Immortals CrossFit Challenge in November.
Sean who started CrossFit as an athlete in 2008 and was previously running a CrossFit gym in Brisbane decided to make the move after his business partner Benito Zussino said there was nothing back in here in Gladstone of that nature.
Although the gym in Gladstone has got off to a great start, O'Neill doesn't put it down to just the location.
"I think there's a market for CrossFit anywhere," he said.
Mr O'Neill said the difference between CrossFit and some other exercise outlets is that everyone who wants to be there is there.
"CrossFit is all about empowering people and improving quality of life," he said.
