Crocs? We're not scared of crocodiles up here

LAST year there were 11 unconfirmed crocodile sightings in the Mackay region and so far we have had only one.

While Mackay residents are not overly concerned, they still aren't allowing their children to swim.

Concerned mother Jean Fenton said it would be nice if they could swim today.

"I usually do go for a swim, but I will wait until I know it's safe," she said.

Ms Fenton questions why crocodiles are at Lamberts beach and if it has something to do with climate change or over population.

"I remember swimming in the Tully River, when I was younger, but you cannot do that now because there are too many crocs.

Mackay resident Hanna Partridge (above) said she was not too concerned about the crocodile sighting. "The ocean is the crocodile's habitat, and we are the ones coming into their home," she said.

Ms Partridge said it didn't happen that often and it was because of the rain.

Mother of two and casual surfer Janessa Hazelwood, who was at Lamberts Beach with her family, said it mostly happened when Mackay had had a lot of rain.

"I think the rain has washed them out of the channels and creeks."

Ms Hazelwood is not worried because it isn't a common occurrence. However, if the conditions were right today, she would not be surfing.
