Crews on scene as fire breaks out at Auckland St apartment

A PLANTER box went up in flames on a balcony in an Auckland St apartment building, sending smoke billowing opposite Gladstone Central State School.

The blaze began at 10.20am and fire crews were quick on the scene, with the fire extinguished less than 10 minutes later.

Two crews from Gladstone QFRS Urban Command were called to the fire, which luckily occurred in an empty unit and near-empty complex.

Neighbours said they did not hear a smoke alarm, but heard a woman yelling at units checking if people were home, before heading out to inspect the fire.

A QFRS spokeswoman said the fire did not appear to be suspicious and the cause had not been determined.
