Craig Thomson to serve three months for sex services fraud

DISGRACED Federal MP Craig Thomson will spend three months behind bars after being sentenced this morning over the misuse of union funds.

The former member for Dobell was previously found to have stripped the Health Services Union of more than $24,000 to fund personal trips and, among other things, the services of prostitutes.

The fraudulent transactions were made on his union issued credit card over a period of five years.

Melbourne Magistrate Charlie Rozencwajg described Thomson's behaviour as a "breach of trust of the highest order" and handed down a head sentence of 12 months jail with nine months suspended.

Thomson's legal team is in the process of launching an immediate appeal.

Thomson was convicted of using union funds to pay for sex workers, flights for his wife, hotel stays, make cash withdrawals, and buy items such as cigarettes and firewood.

He faced a maximum penalty of five years' jail.

The magistrate previously said it would be an affront to common sense to think the credit card could be used to pay for sexual services.

Thomson's lawyer has urged the magistrate not to send him to jail, arguing the amount of money involved was small in comparison to other cases of white collar crimes.

His lawyer argued his client's loss of career and public notoriety was punishment enough.
