Meet the Big6 Nature Pix competition winner

THE winner of the Big6 Nature Pix photography competition has been announced.

The competition, presented by Gladstone Ports Corporation and The Observer, invited kids and adults to enter their best photo of the region's spectacular natural environment.

More than $4000 in prizes was on offered.

The overall winner was Shane Weatherall, for his photo of a crab enjoying a tasty treat.

Shane shares the story of his photograph:

I went through all my photos but nothing was really jumping out at me.

So I went down to Barney Point specifically to get some photos for the (Big 6) competition.

I couldn't believe my luck, seeing that crab sitting there in front of the sunrise.

I went the day before and got about 10 shots, but I knew this was the one.

When I looked at the camera LCD I thought it looked pretty cool.

My mother in law had told me about the competition and a friend said I should enter too.

I've been taking photos since I was 15, so that's more than 20 years.

When I was 17 I did a basic course, but since then I've just gained more knowledge on how photography works.

I'm stoked that I've won the competition and the photo will be on a billboard. I drove down this morning to see where its going; it'll be on a billboard on the left of the marina bridge.
