Gymnastics pair hopes to score place in regional team
CHLOE Martin and Ainsley Graham are like any young gymnasts attending big events: nerves racing when it comes time to begin competition.
But when the pair heads to Rockhampton this weekend, the jitters will hit them a little less.
As part of the Gladstone Gymnastics Club team heading to the Regional Championships, they are two of nearly 10 Gladstone athletes in level six taking on the challenge.
"It actually makes it easier when we are competing, because we are supportive and help each other," Ainsley, 14, said.
Last year, it helped both Ainsley and Chloe all the way to the Central Queensland team for state championships.
But the girls are not taking it as a given they will make the team this year.
The best six gymnasts in the region will make the team, one who had success at Queensland Championships last year.
"Last year we placed on one apparatus. There were three or four of us from Gladstone in that," Chloe said.
Both have already qualified for the states regardless of position in Rockhampton.
The Regionals are a mandatory competition for gymnasts to attend to make states, but also offer the added chance of success.
For Ainsley, it will be confirmation of where she stands before heading to Brisbane in late September.
"Having made the team before, I hope I do well again, I usually do all right at the Regionals," she said.
It has been a lot of effort for the Gladstone girls, and Chloe is glad to have the chance to finally show the improvement.
"We train together seven times a week," she said.
