Court hears of hoon's horse plans

A MAN has told an Ipswich court he was "going to buy a horse to get down to the shops" to prevent him from repeatedly driving while disqualified.

Ipswich Magistrates Court heard Scott Brian Thompson's latest offence happened when his girlfriend became involved in an argument with a park manager over not being able to afford cigarettes.

After a few heated words between the manager and Thompson, who was disqualified from driving at the time, Thompson jumped in his vehicle and spun it around in circles.

Police Prosecutor Senior Constable Bill Stothard said the spinning wheels sprayed gravel and asphalt around the Atkinson's Dam car park, damaging a sign in the process.

When police arrived at the disturbance, on August 7, they discovered Thompson's vehicle was also unregistered.

He was charged with driving without due care and attention, and driving while disqualified and unregistered.

Magistrate Donna MacCallum noted Thompson's "history for disqualified driving is appalling".

Defence lawyer Matthew Fairclough told the court the car belonged to Thompson's girlfriend and he hadn't known it was unregistered.

Mr Fairclough said his client was the primary carer for his partner, who has chronic pancreatitis and seizures, and submitted references.

Thomson, 23, wept as Ms MacCallum sentenced him to six months in prison with immediate parole. He was also disqualified from driving for two years and fined $500.

Thompson said: "I want to say one thing. I'm going to buy a horse to get down to the shops because I live on acreage now."
