Corletto confident of Netball World Cup fitness

AFTER spending the past three weeks with her foot in a moon boot, Australian defender Julie Corletto has allayed any concerns about her fitness ahead of the World Cup which starts in Sydney on Friday.

The 28-year-old (pictured), set to retire after the tournament, will attempt to win her third consecutive world title with the Diamonds, who are unbeaten in their past 19 matches.

Corletto has been restricted to fitness sessions in the pool since last month's ANZ Championship grand final, but trained with the squad on Saturday and said yesterday she had pulled up without any issues.

"It's feeling great now, and this is when I wanted it to feel good, leading into the World Cup," she said.

"It's the best preparation I could have had considering the circumstances."

Corletto and veteran Rebecca Bulley are expected to share the goal defence duties, with Bulley having enjoyed a trouble-free preparation since helping the Firebirds win the trans-Tasman title last month.

With eight members of the squad of 12 having played in the gruelling trans-Tasman competition decider in Brisbane, coach Lisa Alexander has ensured any player with injury concerns enjoyed plenty of rest in the lead-up to the World Cup.

Captain Laura Geitz (knee) and deputy Kim Green (calf) have also tried to manage their niggles to ensure they are as close as possible to 100% fitness for the opening game against Trinidad and Tobago on Friday night.
