Cop’s ‘traumatic’ injury at RBT station

A SUNSHINE Coast police officer has undergone major surgery in an attempt to save his right leg after he was run down by a motorcyclist while manning an RBT station.

Senior Constable Len Elliott from the Beerwah Police Station was performing random breath tests on Steve Irwin Way at Beerwah, when he was hit by the motorcycle about 9.20pm on Friday.

Early information suggested a motorcycle heading south failed to stop at the RBT site, about 200m north of the Roys Rd intersection.

Snr Const Elliott realised the rider was not going to stop, he attempted to intercept the bike and was struck.

Sunshine Coast Central Patrol Group Inspector Jason Overland said Snr Const Elliott sustained "traumatic" injuries.

"He's been taken to Royal Brisbane Hospital where he's undergone surgery last night (Friday) and I understand he's currently recovering from his very serious injuries and we're looking after him, doing everything we can," he said.

Insp Overland refused to comment on reports the officer's leg had been amputated.

"He has suffered traumatic injury to his right lower limb and as to his exact medical condition, I'm not in a position to comment," he said.

"He's serious but stable. Having undergone surgery Len has a long way to go."

Snr Const Elliott, 44, is married with three children.

"He's one of our own," Insp Overland said. "Len is a professional, mature police officer. He was a valued member of the team at Beerwah.

A 19-year-old Glasshouse Mountains man is helping police with their inquiries.

"I understand (the motorcycle rider) suffered some injuries as a consequence of the accident, pulled his motorcycle up some distance down the road and then secreted the motorcycle, called someone to pick him up and that's where we follow the trail," Insp Overland said.

"We anticipate we'll be able to resolve the matter as quickly as possible."
