Community Chest: Events coming up in Gladstone

HERE'S a rundown of some of the community events coming up in Gladstone in August and September.

Art workshops with Felicia Lloyd

FELICIA Lloyd will host a printmaking for beginners art class on August 29 from 10am-2pm.

It will be held at Crow St Creative, 5 Cross St. The class costs $120, which includes inks and some materials, bring paper.

RSPCA cent sale

THE Friends of RSPCA's next cent sale will be held at the Senior Citizens Centre on August 29.

Doors will open at 11am for a 1pm start. All proceeds will go to the care of foster cats and dogs. To reserve a table call 0418 188 812.

Wednesday night art classes

FROM 6-9pm Wednesday nights at Creative Gladstone, 97 Auckland St. Painting, drawing, mixed media suitable for beginners or anyone looking for a creative escape during the week.

Camera club

THE Gladstone Camera Club's next meeting is on September 1 at the Valleys Juniors Rugby League Football Club on Aerodrome Rd, beginning at 7.30pm.

The demonstration for the month will be "Self Portraits".

Boyne Tannum orchid meet

BOYNE-Tannum Orchid and Foliage Society Inc has a monthly meeting on the first Thursday of every month in the Mt Larcom Room downstairs at the Boyne/Tannum Community Centre.

Plants are tabled at 7pm with the meeting starting at 7.30pm. We welcome guest speaker Judy Turner from the Benaraby Junction Nursery on September 3 who will be giving an "Introduction to Spring".

Writers' group

THE Gladstone Area Writers' Group meets the first Thursday of the month, 6pm at the Gladstone Library.

The next meeting will be held on September 3. All ages and all abilities welcome; come along, learn and share.

Quilt and craft expo

A QUILT and craft expo will be held at St Mark's Anglican Church, Sayre St, Boyne Island, on September 4-5, 9.30am-4pm each day.

On offer will be Devonshire tea, display of quilts and craft and a trading table where there will be crafts, homemade baked goods and produce for sale.

There will also be a raffle and door prize, as well as a sausage sizzle on Saturday. The bargain shop will be open both days. Inquiries, phone Wendy 0429 497 780.

Charity dance

A CHARITY dance will be held on September 5 at the Calliope RSL Memorial Hall from 6.30-11.30pm.

There will be music by the Moorhead Dance Band. Admission is $15. For bookings and inquiries phone 4973 8330.

Proceeds will go towards the Gladstone Men's Shed.

CQUni Open day

THE CQUniversity Gladstone will be holding an Open Day from 9am-2pm on September 6, at the marina campus.

Boyne Tannum Men's Shed Gatherings

IF YOU love a good card game, then come on down to the Scouts Hut off Canoe Point Road Tannum Sands.

Every Thursday from 8am-12 pm the Boyne Tannum Men's Shed host gatherings, free to anyone to come and socialise.

Bindaree sale

THE Friends of Bindaree sale day is held every Wednesday, 7.30-11.30am, selling clothing, shoes, toys, books, linen and furniture, at Wyndam Ave, Boyne Island.

JP and CDEC course

EXPRESSIONS of interest are being taken for an online course to become a justice of the peace or a commissioner for declarations. Email training@ qja.com.au to be on the waiting list.

Helpers needed

THE Friends of RSPCA Group Gladstone is looking for voluntary drivers for the RSPCA van to transport animals to vet appointments and adoptions.

You will also be required to process the dogs, which includes bathing, vet treating and doing behavioural assessments. Training will be included.

You will need to have a licence, a good driving record, a sense of humour and of course not forgetting about a love for animals.

The amount of time you will need to give will depend on the week's workload, however, you will be on a roster system that is changeable.

The roster is usually a few hours a day for three days every five to six weeks. If you would like any further details, call our van co-ordinator Lisa Warman on 0412 379 928.

Embroidery group

THE Embroidery Guild of Qld Inc Gladstone branch invites new members to join, meet every Wednesday 9am-noon and Saturday 1-4pm at the Gladstone Showgrounds.

The group focuses on hand-made embroidery and sharing tips and tricks. Contact Lyn Baldock on 4978 4877.

Yoga at the hub

YOGA is held at the community hub, 5 Buller St, on Wednesday, with a relaxation and stretch with Pushpa at 1.30pm, plus evening yoga classes with Gabriella on Mondays, Wednesday and Thursdays.
