Common factors precede male suicide

NEW research on suicide identifies four "common elements" most men show before they try to end their lives.

The beyondblue research reveals most pre-suicidal men display "stoic beliefs about masculinity"; depression or disrupted moods; social isolation; and they use coping methods to avoid the issues confronting them.

With men three times more likely than women to suicide, the research aims to help people identify whether a man in their life is contemplating ending his life.

Beyondblue chief executive officer Georgie Harman said the four factors could lead men to think they were a burden on those around them and could also lead to beliefs they were "un-manly" for seeking help.

"By shedding light on what families, friends and colleagues can look out for, this research is crucial in our efforts to prevent suicide," Ms Harman said.

Researchers conducted more than 200 interviews and online surveys with men across the country who had recently attempted suicide, and 165 friends of such men.

About 90% of those interviewed said support from someone they trusted was the most crucial factor to interrupting a suicide attempt.
