Coalition stitches up $25m deal to fix Kin Kora roundabout

GLADSTONE residents would see more progress under a Federal Coalition government, according to the local member, after it teamed up with the State Government to fund $25million to fix Kin Kora roundabout.

Incumbent Flynn MP Ken O'Dowd made the announcement on Tuesday with Queensland's Roads Minister Scott Emerson and Independent MP Liz Cunningham, ensuring that it would be the first of many positive outcomes between the governments if the Federal Coalition is elected next week.

Both Mr Emerson and Mr O'Dowd took a swipe at the Labor Party over not liaising with the State Government before announcing its partially-funded $10million promise for the roundabout.

The Coalition's promise is fully funded following the completion of a state government business case recommending an upgrade to a four-way signalised intersection.

Mr O'Dowd said if elected, the project would start in late 2014 and take about eight months to complete.

"If we don't get into government the deal will be off, " he said.

"It's so good to see the feds and the state government working together and these are the outcomes you can expect."

"This $25 million project will be a boost for the people of Gladstone.

"This is one of my highest transport priorities and I'm pleased it is part of a future Coalition government's first term agenda."

The intersection of the Dawson Highway and Philip St in Gladstone is used by more than 30,000 cars each day.

When asked whether residents could see a commitment matching or bettering Labor's promises on the Philip St development and Barney Point redevelopment, Mr O'Dowd said his priorities were for four-lane highways to Calliope, Yarwun and Boyne Island.

Mr Emerson said fixing Kin Kora roundabout was the most important road project for Gladstone.

It's been the priority for the community here for years.

"Today's announcement is the fulfilment of a dream of both Ken and Liz because they've been so passionate about this project," he said.

"I can't emphasise how important it is to have a Federal Coalition in Canberra and the LNP at a state level; having two governments working closely together.

"The reality is Labor has come out previously and made promises without consulting the State Government."

Mrs Cunningham said it was the "best news we've had in a long time".

"It's been the priority for the community here for years,'' she said.

"It's the bottleneck in Gladstone.

"I certainly hope people will be understanding of the disruption while it's happening and I'm really excited about the commitment.

"With the construction of that intersection, the shopping centre will go ahead and local businesses will benefit to keep those shopping dollars in Gladstone and give more choice to the community."

Mayor Gail Sellers was stuck in a council meeting, but said the announcement was "excellent news", echoing Mrs Cunningham's sentiments about keeping shoppers in Gladstone.
