CLUB IN CRISIS: Goats may be kicked out of Union comp

RUGBY UNION: In what is an unfortunate common theme, another club is in crisis mode.

Gladstone Rugby Union Football Club Goats has one more chance and if it fails to field a team in the Rugby Capricornia Limited competition for the third successive time - the club will fold.

Goats forfeited its opening two games - a home round one fixture against Frenchville Pioneers and against Colts on the weekend.

The saving grace and in an environment where time is as precious as players, is that the club has a bye round this weekend before a programmed round four again against Pioneers in Rockhampton.

The 'extra' time is a perfect time for Goats stalwarts such as GRUFC president David O'Brien and his team of volunteers and current players to pledge for newcomers into the sport.

"It's very disappointing and we had 11 players available on Saturday, but last Thursday we were forced to call the game off," an upset and emotional O'Brien said.

"Thursday's at 7pm is the cut-off and if I don't call it off, the club ends up paying $500 in penalties."

Club veterans Steve Ball and Anthony Groenintwoud were prepared to play against Colts as were the usual core group of Adam Conway, Eamon Chapman, Paul Tema and Adam Edmistone.

"You want at least 19 players and all these old guys like Steve Ball and Anthony Groenintwoud were ready to come out of retirement," O'Brien said.

"This has been coming now for three years and last year we had Biloela to support us with players (early in season) which has been wonderful.

"I'm at training with all the guys and the senior guys like Adam Conway are all very upset.

"We're all extremely worried and we have never folded before and I'll do whatever I can (to get new players)."

Conway, who joined Goats in 2014, said the next game is crucial.

"As a group we have decided that our next game on April 7 is the make or break for us a team," he said. "We will be pushing hard for good attendance at training and social events/team bonding on the weekends.

"We only need three to five committed players who can make most weekends and we will be in the clear."

Should the club fold, the other option is for the Goats to play in a Bundaberg summer competition in order to generate interest ahead of winter next year.

O'Brien said new players of any skill level and even those who have never played Union previously - can attend training at Marley Brown Oval each Tuesday and Thursday from 6pm and he can be contacted on 0419720389.
