Defending champ wary of opponents

THE McDonald’s 2010 Gladstone Closed Tennis Championships were played over the weekend.

The competition attracted 67 competitors ranging from under-10s to over-35s.

Open women’s player Dayle Mitchell competed in the Open Men’s Class against players such as Brendan Warwick who has held the title for the past two years and Stan Tummons, who has been runner-up for the past two years.

Brendan Warwick said it was scary going into the tournament as reigning champion.

“I won my first two matches, but it’s going to get tougher as everyone is playing really well,” he said.

Tournament director Yvonne Fallon said the games on both days were exciting.
