Clive Palmer seeking $1.1 million and costs from Newman
CLIVE Palmer is seeking more than a million dollars in compensation from Premier Campbell Newman for allegedly defaming him.
In a writ lodged with the Supreme Court on Wednesday, Mr Palmer said Mr Newman last month accused him of "corruptly attempt[ing] to influence the decision making of members of the defendant's government" and said Mr Palmer had "improperly offered money to members of the defendant's government so that they might prefer his interests to those of the people they represented".
Mr Palmer's representatives served Mr Newman through the Crown Solicitor.
Mr Palmer is seeking $355,000 in general compensatory damages - "an amount which reflects upon the seriousness of the meanings, the extent of publication, and the harm caused by them" - and aggravated compensatory damages of $750,000 "being for the additional hurt suffered by the plaintiff as a result of the matters".
Mr Palmer also requested Mr Newman pay legal costs.
