Clive announces new leader of QLD Palmer United Party

THE son of an iconic Queensland premier is joining forces with one the nation's most controversial politicians.

John Bjelke-Petersen is the new Queensland leader of the Palmer United Party.

Sunshine Coast politician Clive Palmer on Sunday revealed the son of Joh Bjelke-Petersen would lead his party to the Queensland election next year (2015).

Mr Bjelke-Petersen was endorsed to stand in the seat of Callide earlier this year.

He will take on sitting member, and deputy premier, Jeff Seeney.

Mr Palmer said said PUP needed Mr Bjelke-Petersen.

"Mr Bjelke-Petersen is just the person the party needs, he is a real leader who will be able to deliver real results for all Queenslanders," Mr Palmer said.

Mr Bjelke-Petersen said he was keen to take down Premier Campbell Newman and his government.

"Campbell Newman and his government have failed Queensland and Queenslanders," Mr Bjelke-Petersen said.

"It is time that Queenslanders were represented by a government who is focused on building the state's economy, creating jobs and providing opportunities for local industries.

"Instead the Newman government has sacked thousands of public servants, is planning on selling and leasing the state's assets and has provided foreign companies with taxpayer funded financial contributions."

Joe Bjelke-Petersen was premier of Queensland from 1968 to 1987.

He died in 2005
