Clinton wins as Central battles defensive issues
SOCCER: Central FC coach Joel Maudsley felt his side deserved more than a draw from its Round 10 CQ Premier League against Southside United at the weekend.
Southside held a 3-2 lead at the break until Central captain Garth Lawrie stepped up to bang in his second goal of the match after 51 minutes.
Dylan Clark's goal in the 77th minute silenced the Jardine Park faithful, until an 89th-minute volley from Nathan Mutch levelled the match for Southside.
"I thought we dominated a lot of the play so we were pretty disappointed to get a draw out of it,” Maudsley said.
"I was proud of the boys to fight back from 3-2 down.
"Southside had about five shots and scored four goals. To their credit they finished them well and hit them in the corners.”
Despite fighting back from a goal down, Maudsley knows his side must correct its defensive frailties.
"We have to work on it. It's getting a little frustrating because we're not clearing the ball properly out of defence,” he said.
"We make a good tackle, clear the ball out and it just seems to fall to one of their guys who are sitting just outside the 18-yard box and then it's a shot from there that's costing us.”
Meanwhile, Clinton kept its undefeated start to the season intact with a 3-2 come-from-behind victory against Bluebirds at Webber Park.
Bluebirds took the lead in the seventh minute courtesy of a stunning free kick from Liam McLean before Clinton levelled via an own goal set up by Sammy Roberts.
The home team reclaimed the lead in the 61st minute before goals to Josh Noonan (70th minute) and Liam Jones (77th) sealed the victory for Clinton.
