SOCCER: Clinton FC has delivered another bold statement to CQ Premier League challengers Capricorn Coast with a 5-1 thrashing of Frenchville at the weekend.

The four-goal victory at Clinton Oval keeps the Grubs nipping at the heels of the Yeppoon-based side with two games remaining before finals begin.

Cap Coast holds a three-point lead at the top of the ladder, although Clinton have it all to play for in the final round when the two sides clash at Apex Park.

Goal difference will be key in deciding the minor premiers with Clinton currently five goals better off than Cap Coast.

Clinton needed another dominant performance against Frenchville to keep its goal difference ahead of Cap Coast who won big over Parkana in Saturday night's earlier match.

Clinton dominated the territory and possession stakes against the Roos and had two goals disallowed before captain Chris Hill's towering header opened the scoring after 30 minutes courtesy of a curling Mitch Innocend free kick.

Holding a 1-0 lead at the break, defender and man-of-the-match Nick Ellacott's powerfully driven free kick from beyond 35 yards took the score to 2-0 in the 53rd minute.

Innocend took the score to 3-0 when he tucked home Dom Barra's cross, but Frenchville replied only minutes later through Jordan Miller to offer the visitors a glimmer of hope.

However, a late penalty to Ryan Crawford and an injury-time goal to Josh Noonan added to the Roos' misery and also added to Clinton's goal difference.

"We had numerous chances in the second half," Clinton FC assistant coach Dan Horton said.

"We played well in our final third but we just have lapses in concentration which hurts us and we have to fix that before finals."
