Clarke's ton a masterpiece of determination

I HAVE been fortunate to have seen some great sporting moments in my life.

I was in London when Mal Meninga closed off his rugby league career with a victory as captain of Australia, I was at Lang Park when Wally Lewis walked the ground after he played his last State of Origin Game and I was in Sydney when Cathy Freeman won Olympic Gold.

Those moments were charged with emotion and I don't mind admitting that on each occasion I had a tear in my eye.

As good as they all were I would have traded them all in to have been at the Adelaide Oval yesterday to watch Michael Clarke score his incredible century.

Just a week ago I stood alongside my workmates in the QT newsroom watching in total silence as he delivered his emotional farewell to Phillip Hughes.

He wasn't supposed to play in this week's test, but against all odds he took the field against India only to suffer a back spasm when cruising along at 60.

Showing true grit he once again arose to the challenge and came back claiming the century that will live in the memory of every cricket fan in this country.

I rate it as one of the best innings ever played by an Australian batsman.

It may not have been full of brilliant cover drives and the like, but it was full of guts. Michael Clarke you are a champion.
