Colourful collection of circus characters at festival parade

THE start of Gladstone's 51st Harbour Festival was a success on Sunday as dozens of companies and community organisations turned out in an array of circus themed floats.

Participants embraced the fun concept at the Rio Tinto Alcan street parade, and nothing was spared decoration.

More than 50 floats were registered to run, and from 4pm the journey began at the Gladstone Showground, along Goondoon St and finished at the Gladstone Marina.

Families lined the streets and were entertained by a variety of colourful characters.

The Observer's Sobserver edition was popular, with stacks given out as many people recalled the old amusing newspaper.

After the sun went down, QGC's opening night celebration featured the psychedelic Disco Mania plus the WICET fireworks display.

The festival runs until next Saturday.
