Chinese bargains? New Great Wall double cab ute and Haval H6

GREAT Wall is back in Australia hoping to steal sales from the established players in the double-cab ute segment.

The Chinese company scored reasonable sales in Australia before slipping off the radar last year, but now returns as sister company to Haval Motors Australia headquartered in Melbourne.

The plan is Great Wall will focus solely on light commercial vehicles while Haval concentrates on SUVs.

Great Wall's opening salvo this time comes in the shape of the Steed dual-cab ute, with a budget $24,990 drive-away price for its entry-level petrol two-wheel drive model. A dual-cab diesel is $26,990 drive away in two-wheel drive guise and $29,990 for the four-wheel drive version.

The company says the utes are "a new benchmark for the Chinese manufacturing powerhouse with a reputation for toughness and reliability... that offers outstanding value for money."

The utes offer a one-tonne payload, towing capacity of 2000kg, six airbags (including full-length side curtains), ESP, side steps, stainless steel sports bar and 16-inch alloy rims.

The Steed range consists of a single specification and some of the standard inclusions are pleasant surprises. You get heated seats, powered driver's seat, cruise control and a leather-wrapped steering wheel.

Power comes from a 100kW/205Nm 2.4-litre petrol engine with five-speed manual, while the diesel is a 110kW/310Nm 2.0-litre with six-speed manual returning 9L/100km.

The Steed range comes with a three year/100,000km warranty, while Great Wall says it now has a national dealer network of almost 50 dealers.

Sister brand Haval, meanwhile, is hunting down mid-size SUV shoppers with its new H6.

Haval is China's leading SUV manufacturer and it says the H6 has already sold more than a million units in China, making it the biggest selling SUV in the country.

The H6 launches in Australia in Premium and Lux guises, the former $29,990 drive away and the latter $33,990 drive away. Each comes with a five year/100,000km warranty.

They use a 145kW/315Nm 2.0-litre petrol engine and six-speed dual-clutch auto, and come as standard with 17-inch alloys, dual-zone climate control, keyless entry and start, front and rear parking sensors, rear camera and blind spot monitoring.

The Lux uses 19-inch alloys and adds heated Comfort-Tek seats front and rear, adaptive xenon headlights and panoramic sunroof.

The H6 medium SUV joins Haval Australia's range of high riders, including the H2 small urban SUV (from $23,990 drive away), H8 large SUV (from $38,990 drive away) and H9 seven-seat four-wheel drive (from $46,490 drive away) with low range and built on a ladder chassis.

Haval Australia has not released any sales figures since its local arrival about 12 months ago, but the new sub-$30,000 H6 will hope to boost Haval numbers on our roads as an entry into the popular mid-size SUV segment.
