UPDATE: School confirms bomb threat

UPDATE 1:07pm: 

Following the bomb threat made against Gladstone West State School this morning, the principle Margie Burrell made the following statement.

"Today our school received a threatening phone call and we immediately contacted police and evacuated the school to ensure the safety of children and staff.

As you may be aware, there have been a number of threatening phone calls received by schools in Queensland and in other states. Police have made public statements that they believe these calls are hoaxes.

However, the safety and wellbeing of students and staff is paramount and the school has enacted its emergency response plan and responded to this threat in line with established procedures.

All students are safe and the school will continue to keep you informed if there are any developments. Please continue to monitor this website and the school's Facebook for updates.

The Department of Education and Training (DET) is working closely and will continue to work closely with Queensland Police to ensure the safety of all students and staff.

 

Gladstone station officer in charge, Matt Russell, praised Gladstone West State School's actions this morning, saying the school acted extraordinarily well in evacuating the children and assisting police.  

UPDATE 11:10pm: 

POLICE are investigating a bomb threat that was made against West Gladstone State School this morning.

Four police cars and Gladstone CIB attended the school and carried out a thorough search of all classrooms and buildings at the school.

By 10.45am Gladstone police finished its search and was unable to locate anything that resembled a bomb or would be a cause for concern.

Gladstone police station officer in charge, Matt Russell, said the investigation into who made the call was ongoing.

He said that it was too early to say where the bomb threat came from.

The bomb threat today follows a recent spate of bomb threats made against Australian schools from overseas callers.

It's unknown at this stage whether the bomb threat today is linked.

EARLIER:

CHILDREN at West Gladstone State School were evacuated to the school yard, but they are now returning to the classrooms. 

Four police cars, plus a Criminal Investigations Branch (CIB) vehicle were parked at the front.

It appears police were searching through the classrooms. 

Parents who are dropping off their kids are being advised to go down to the school yard end.
