Child safety warning over laundry pods

AFTER more than 280 incidents of children swallowing small laundry washing powder pods in the past four years, the consumer watchdog is warning parents about the dangers.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission has joined a global campaign warning parents to ensure laundry products are out of the reach of children.

It comes after 85 Australian cases last year that involved children aged six years old or younger swallowing the pods that contain highly concentrated liquid detergent.

The commission said in a statement there were two deaths and 16,000 swallowings of the laundry pods each year worldwide.

Swallowing them can lead to chemical burns, vomiting, internal bleeding and worse.

While the products are safe for use, they should be stored out of reach of children, particularly toddlers, or in cupboards with child-resistant locks.
