Deaf cattle dog pup on $3000 flight to new American home

A DEAF Australian blue cattle dog pup is on a $3000 flight to its new owner in America who is hard of hearing, works at a school for the deaf and blind, and has a deaf boyfriend.

Chevy has headed off for a big adventure abroad after being adopted from a Hervey Bay shelter by an American couple.

The five-month-old rescue dog from Wide Bay Animal Rescue, was born deaf and came into the care of pet co-ordinator Marie Barnes at just six weeks old.

While Marie said it was not uncommon to fly pets around Australia, this was the first time one of her pups had been sent abroad with the trip estimated to cost about $3000.

Chevy's new owner Renee Saraceni from Virginia said while the process of relocating the pup had been both lengthy and costly, Chevy was worth the effort.

"We were going to wait until summer but one day a few weeks ago I came across a picture on Facebook of an Australian cattle dog puppy who was deaf and my heart just melted," she said.

"We wanted to adopt Chevy because I myself am hard of hearing and my boyfriend is deaf.

"I work at Virginia School for the Deaf and Blind as well.

"We wanted a loving pet to add to our home, but even more so a deaf puppy we could train and love and communicate with."
