Chelsea Baker's Star keeps rising

RUGBY LEAGUE: Chelsea Baker's stellar rise to success has gone to a new level with her selection for the Harvey Norman Jillaroos Merit Team.

Baker said she was happy with the selection nod this week but was a bit surprised given the quality of players.

"It's very exciting and I wasn't expecting it,” she said.

"The talent of players on show at the State of Origin was really good.”

The winning New South Wales team gained eight players in the merit team, while nine Queenslanders made the list, including Baker.

The representative teams were told before the game that independent selectors would be picking a Jillaroo team.

Baker was smarting over the Queensland loss but said she saw the bigger picture for the game's future.

"It was a very disappointing result to lose but this has been very exciting for women's rugby league,” she said.

The success of the inaugural women's State of Origin was evident with more than a million TV viewers and close to 7000 spectators at North Sydney Oval.

Baker has previously been selected for the Jillaroos, which went on to win the 2017 Women's Rugby League World Cup.

In June this year, she joined the Brisbane Broncos women's team ahead of the inaugural NRL Women's Premiership to start in September.

This weekend will be the first at home for Baker since her training and playing schedule kicked-off in April.

Baker's success did not happen overnight.

It has required great sacrifice and hard work.

"The players' passion is pure and the commitment is great because we work very hard with training and juggle both family and work responsibilities,” Baker said.
