Chelsea Baker to headline 'Girls Only' camp

RUGBY LEAGUE: Girls from across the Gladstone region have the chance to learn from one of their idols next month.

Australian Jillaroo Chelsea Baker will be a special guest at the Gladstone Junior Rugby League Girls Only Camp to be held from February 24-25.

Baker will join in the drills and share her experiences of playing for Queensland and Australia.

The overnight camp, open for girls turning 13 to 17 this year, is a first for women's rugby league in Gladstone.

"We've never actually had a camp in town - we've had training days for the girls but they've only ever been for a few hours long,” Baker said. "It will be fantastic and it's something new that hasn't happened in women's rugby league in town.

"I work casually for the NRL doing game development so I'll be there helping to develop skills and doing all the clinic things I usually do for work.

"So I'll be going around, seeing the girls, asking them lots of questions and letting them ask me a million questions.”

People will be required to bring a sleeping bag and/or sheets, pillow or swag and training gear.

Accommodation will be provided at the new High Performance Centre, with all meals provided by GJRL.

Baker has committed to the camp despite a potential clash with February's Commonwealth Nines Championships.

The tournament will be played on February 23-24 at Redcliffe's Dolphin Oval.

"For now I'm booked in for the camp unless something happens,” she said.

"I'm not expecting to be there (at the nines), but if I'm lucky enough to make the team I'll be asking them to send me home as soon as the competition is done so I can be part of the camp.

"I really don't want to miss the camp but obviously an Australian jersey comes first.”
