Charges over death of disabled boy in bath

A MAN charged with the manslaughter of a disabled child who was found floating in a bath has fronted court.

The 32-year-old, who cannot be named, was allegedly outside having a cigarette when the four-year-old boy nearly drowned.

Documents before the Hervey Bay court allege that when the man left the boy in the bath with other children, the plug was not in but when he returned, it was and the boy was "face down" and the bath was filling with water.

The man told police he carried the child from the bath to the kitchen and commenced CPR.

The child was rushed to hospital and stabilised before being airlifted to Brisbane where a decision was later made to turn off life support.

When Maryborough police attended the house they found it in a "very unkempt" state with soiled nappies and other items strewn about the floor.

The accused was charged in March, 2013 and remanded in custody.

The charge was mentioned briefly this week and will return to court later this year.
