Chanel College clinches Gladstone Rugby Sevens tournament

CHANEL College was overall winner of the Conoco Philips Gladstone 7s Rugby tournament with a dominant display of skill and teamwork today.

There were 21 teams registered from schools all over Central Queensland.

Chanel Open Boys captain Chase Gourley said the boys showed some great heart and ticker to win the final match against Emerald 3-1.

"It was awesome to win. A great way to end the tournament by winning the final," he said.

Chanel boys coach Calvin Bennett said the sport of rugby sevens had increased in popularity among boys and girls.

"It was pretty cool how the day went and we had about 65 kids participating today and were really keen to play," he said.

"We had a team in every final of the boys. It's one of the fastest growing team sports and will only get bigger."

School teams from Gladstone, Bundaberg, Rockhampton, Emerald and Biloela all competed for finals pennants.

The final result winners were under-12 Mixed Kin Kora State School, under-14 Boys Chanel College, under-15 Girls Emerald State High School, under-16 Boys Chanel College, Open Girls Chanel College and Open Boys Chanel College.

Tournament director and Queensland Rugby Union country development manager Matt Cullen was impressed with the potential of playing talent on the day.

"There were 276 kids here today aged between 12 and 17, both boys and girls, and the popularity of the game has increased becoming very global," he said.

"Seven-a-side is now an Olympic sport and after the women's team won gold in 2016 at Rio, there has been a 30 per cent increase of girls playing union in Australia.

"The day was mainly about participation and finding pathways for talented up-and-coming players."
