Champ picks out local trio

THREE Gladstone league players blitzed the Michael McLean Cup in Bowen at the weekend, making the merit team from more than 200 players.

The Gladstone Valleys under-15s team, including Beau Budak from Wallabies, hit the highway last week to participate in the Michael McLean Cup Challenge, and did exceptionally well to make the grand final.

Mike McLean personally chose a Cup Challenge Merit team consisting of 17 of the best players during the carnival, and Valleys captain Bayden Brown, Ryan O’Connor and Brandon Gilchrist were chosen.

This reflected how well they performed during the tournament, and the skill and determination they displayed.

Valleys lost their first game on Friday night to Burdekin Roosters then moved on to beat Proserpine Brahmans and Bowen Seagulls on Saturday.

Sunday brought an early game against Townsville Brothers which put Valleys into the semi-finals against the Roosters.

Valleys were victorious against the Roosters and moved on to the grand final against Townsville Western Lions, however the NQ outfit proved to be too strong, beating Valleys 32 to 16.

Mike McLean began his career as a Bowen junior, and then went on to play for Brisbane Easts, Sydney Easts and a number of games for Queensland. Ten teams from across Queensland took to the challenge.
