Library evacuated after reports of gas leak in Central Lane

GLADSTONE Library and surrounding buildings have been evacuated after fire crews were alerted to a gas leak in the CBD at 9.30am.

The leak has been identified at a Central Lane and Roseberry Street address.

A Department of Community Safety spokesperson said the gas was natural and non-toxic, and the leak was expected to be repaired by noon.

Emergency services are working with gas technicians on the scene, and surrounding businesses have been notified.

Streets which may notice an odour include Roseberry St, Goondoon St, Lord St and Central Lane.

The Queensland Fire and Rescue Service in on scene and has the situation under control.

The library has been evacuated as a precaution, and residents are urged to stay out of the area for the next few hours. 

Power has been cut to the area after Ergon Energy was directed by emergency services to isolate two transformer areas at 10.30am.

Central region corporate communications manager Bob Pleash said the power outages had impacted 32 customers on Goondoon St and Central Lane.

He said at this point there was no restoration time set, but power would be restored as soon as possible.
