THE Catholic Diocese of Toowoomba has vowed to respect the cultural significance of the site of the former Toowoomba South State School.

The diocese has purchased the Ruthven St property from the State Government and plans to redevelop it as an administrative and professional development centre for Catholic Education.

The school was shutdown by Education Queensland in December, 2013, as part of state-wide closures of public schools.

Bishop Robert McGuckin said the property would allow the diocese to amalgamate Catholic Education facilities from three sites across Toowoomba.

Bishop McGuckin said the diocese had been looking for a single site for years.

"In redeveloping the site, the diocese will create office space for the administrative functions of the Catholic Education office, alongside conferencing and meeting spaces," he said.

Bishop McGuckin said the diocese would ensure that the redevelopment "respected and reflected the cultural significance of the building and site".

"With a tradition of more than 140 years as a location for education in the region, the diocese believes that the local community will be supportive of a redevelopment that maintains this purpose," he said.

Education Queensland would not release the sale price except to that the sale was "at or above market valuation".
