Case for nuclear dump ‘optimistic’

THE case for a nuclear waste storage facility in South Australia has been built on optimistic assumptions, according to research released yesterday.

Australia Institute economic analysis found the main beneficiaries of the facility would be nuclear power firms.

A royal commission that is investigating the proposal for the storage facility has suggested those companies will pay $1.75 million per tonne of waste stored.

The new report says those firms may not be willing to pay that much.
