Cars revving to go for third round of CQDRA series
MOTORSPORT: The weather gods are set to deliver some welcome sunshine to Benaraby for Round 3 of the Central Queensland Drag Racing Association series on Saturday.
The 2018 series got off to a stuttering start with Round 1 washed out and Round 2 wrapping up early because of rain.
CQDRA president Col O'Connor is confident of a bone-dry track and one that won't need drying out like it did prior to Round 2.
Drying the track is an unenviable task and one that O'Connor would rather avoid.
"You've got to sweep all the water off it, dry it out and drag the track with some tyres,” he said. "Then you've got to spray traction compound on the whole track to get it to work so it's a fairly involved process.
"We pride ourselves on making every effort to have it raceable.”
Saturday's forecast is for a mostly sunny day with a top of 29C making it perfect weather for spectators.
There will be nine vehicle brackets competing over the quarter mile ranging from Super Comp cars to Junior Bikes.
O'Connor said all nine categories would provide a great spectacle, although the loudest cheers were for drivers who weren't afraid to show some flare.
"Every person has a different view on all the vehicles. Obviously the noisier do attract a lot more attention and the bigger the burnout the more cheers they get,” he said.
"It depends on who puts on the bigger show.”
Gates open at Benaraby Raceway from 10am, racing begins at 1pm and runs through until 10pm.
