Caroline Buchanan in charge in BMX supercross

Australia's Caroline Buchanan maintained her lead in the BMX supercross world cup despite suffering her first loss of the series in the Netherlands.

The Canberra rider won the time trial on day one of the third round in Papendal, before being edged out by Dutch rider Laura Smulders in the elite women's final.

Buchanan said she wasn't disappointed with the result, adding she believed she was on track for a strong showing at the world championships in Colombia later this month.

"A win in the time trial yesterday and a second place with a photo finish at the line today - I'm pleased and walk away injury free," she said.

"I'm coming into the world championships in 21 days confident."

Buchanan missed a medal at the London Games in 2012, and again will be a favourite in Rio provided she secures selection with a good result at the worlds.

Fellow Aussie Sam Willoughby finished fourth in the men's final.
