Talented apprentice enjoying a career on the rise
CAIRNS resident Neil Muller is a young man making a name for himself in Queensland's building and construction industry.
Named Construction Apprentice of the Year at the 2011 Construction Skills Queensland (CSQ) Excellence Awards, Neil was recognised for his maturity and vision beyond his years, and his success has continued.
Having finished his apprenticeship at FNQ Electrical, Neil now works in a leading hand role at the company overseeing a team of three apprentices and taking on greater responsibility than is typically entrusted to those with his level of experience.
Neil said his CSQ Excellence Award had given him the extra confidence to take his career to the next level.
"After four years of hard work in my apprenticeship, it was very satisfying to be recognised with such a great honour," he said.
"Since winning the award, my confidence levels have increased and I am now mentoring and challenging my team to be their very best.
"The Awards are a great chance for everyday workers to show their contributions, whether they are a trainee or have been in the industry for years."
Neil attended last year's Awards presentation and said the night was very memorable.
"I went to last year's Awards with my employer with no expectations of winning the award," he said.
"I remember being shocked as my name was read out and hearing the cheers from my table as I walked up to accept the award.
"It was very exciting and the next day my I received lots of calls from family and friends congratulating me on my win."
CSQ CEO Brett Schimming said awards showcased the best of Queensland's construction and building industry.
"Over its 17-year history, the Awards dinner has grown to become the Queensland building and construction industry's most prestigious event," he said.
"The night will bring together a true cross section of the industry from trainees and apprentices to major employers," he said.
The Construction Apprentice of the Year category will once again feature at this year's Awards.
Guests are invited to celebrate at the gala event on November 9 at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre.
