Car park argument leads to shooting

A BRISBANE man has been charged with attempted murder over a shooting in a Gold Coast shopping centre car park.

Police said the 43-year-old man became involved in an argument with a 35-year-old woman in the Helensvale car park, one of the Gold Coast's busiest shopping centres.

The argument allegedly escalated shortly after 10am yesterday, when the man's gun fired during a violent struggle.

Senior-Sergeant Mark Procter, of Coomera CIB, said a shot was discharged during a struggle after the woman was assaulted with the butt of the rifle.

"At that point in time, three bystanders have intervened and have wrestled with the male person armed with the gun," he said.

"The male person managed to get away and the three bystanders recovered the firearm.

"It's probably lucky for her that they have intervened at this point in time.

"It was very brave."

The man handed himself into police and was later charged. He is due to appear in the Southport Magistrates Court tomorrow.
