Cancer Support Group celebrates

A LITTLE bit of pampering and laughter goes a long way when coping with cancer.

The Gladstone Cancer Support and Pamper Group provide this, as well as support and nurturing from those who have been through or are going through cancer. Yesterday the group celebrated its fifth birthday at the Women’s Health Centre.

Group founders Helena Holmes and Marie Figueiredo started the group five years ago when Marie was diagnosed with ovarian cancer.

“Marie needed someone to talk to who was going through the same thing and I found the only group offering this service was in Melbourne,” Helena said.

So, the women formed their own group so that cancer sufferers could talk about how they feel. Then one month after opening Helena was also diagnosed with cancer.

The group offer pampering sessions for women with cancer every second Tuesday; where the group eats, laughs and does girly things like painting toe nails and foot baths. Helena said she is very proud of how it has all worked out.

Anyone interested in attending can contact the Women’s Health Centre.
