Campbell sisters qualify for semis

BRONTE and Cate Campbell finished second and third respectively in their 50m freestyle heat, to qualify for the semi-finals.

Drawn two lanes apart in Heat 8, Bronte finished in 24.87 seconds and was the ninth fastest qualifer.

Cate touched the wall just behind her in 24.94 - the equal tenth fastest time.

Both were some way off leading qualifier Ranomi Kromowidjojo of the Netherlands who managed 24.51.

Cate has been laid low with a virus since helping the 4x100m relay team to win Australia's solitary gold so far and was relieved to just be able to take part in the Games.
