Calliope’s mistakes a bonus for Brothers in Shield

BROTHERS and Calliope Roosters smashed each other over the Mack Baker Shield at Marley Brown Oval on Saturday.

Brothers ultimately claimed the shield with a 20-point win, with Calliope's little mistakes throughout the match costing them.

The defence from Brothers was organised and was equally matched with barnstorming runs from their forward pack.

Calliope struggled to string plays together with mistakes costing them.

Two drops from high bombs in the first half continued to put pressure on their defence and allowed Brothers to run through their third try, to lead at half time by 10.

The second half belonged to Brothers, starting with a loose pass being picked up by the winger, Reuben Thaiday, who dribbled kicked the ball down the sideline to regather and score.

Calliope's Gavin Nichols put Tyler Farrington into a hole in the 60th minute to bring the margin back to 10.

Brother's Centre Michael Deacon put a stop to any Calliope come back, with a fast and physical run through the defence to score.

Calliope hit back once more before Brothers sealed the victory with a converted penalty and a try in the final minute of the match to win 36 to 16.

Brother's coach Shaun Corson-Crook said the front row laid the foundation with ball carrying and defence.

"It was a quality performance and the whole team lifted today," Corson-Crook said.

"We did the small things well and really gelled. We knew what we were in for and they really turned up."

Calliope Roosters Captain/Coach Mohi Anderson said it was a strong performance from the Roosters.

"It was a tough game, these games always are and we took it to them," Anderson said.

"We just didn't stick to our game plan."
