CAKE smashes are becoming all the rage for first birthday parties, leaving many adults wishing they could do the same.

On May 16 Oliver Mackie smashed his way through his first birthday cake with a Very Hungry Caterpillar theme.

Mum Sharon said she knew Oliver would enjoy celebrating his first birthday in the messy way.

"Ollie has always been known as my little caterpillar so the theme was an easy thought," she said.

"Watching Ollie feel the texture then realise 'Oh! I can eat this' was so amazing to watch. He had an absolute ball.

"He is such a delightful little man and having the day pan out perfect could not have come at a better time."

Oliver's cake smash was made possible with the help of locals Debbie Parr from T Leaf Creative, Heidi Mastroianni from Surprise Me and Heidi and Katrina Timmins from KT's Kreations.

The little man's birthday was celebrated with his family and older brothers Bayley, 6, and Locky, 4.
