All systems go for Hog's Breath with lease for new site

EXPECT something big in Goondoon St in February - big if you're a devotee of Hog's Breath Cafe.

The family restaurant, which has been an icon since 1989, is on its way, and proprietor Alex Staines just can't wait.

From February next year you will be able to eat from the well-loved Hog's Breath menu, on the corner of Goondoon and Herbert sts at the site that was until recently occupied by Retravision.

"I'm thrilled that we will be able to bring some of the excitement and colour back into the main street of town," Mr Staines said, as he announced the signing of a lease on Wednesday.

"Hog's Breath is such a well-known brand - it evokes lots of emotion and I know that the people of Gladstone have been waiting for a long time for us to arrive."

The new restaurant will have seating for 200 people and Mr Staines expects it will provide employment for about 60 people.

He expects work to start on construction at the site in late October and he's confident the February opening date is achievable.

It's been a long, hard slog for Mr Staines since he first thought of opening a Hog's Breath in Gladstone three years ago.

"It was August 2010 when I made the first phone call to Hog's Breath," he said.

In the earlier stages he had looked at no less than eight possible sites, and for some time until just recently the Kirkwood shopping centre was high on the agenda, but continued delays forced him to change his strategy.

"I'm just pleased we're now moving ahead."
