Cabbie relives terror of robbery at knifepoint

KEEPING a clear head, a Rockhampton cab driver grabbed the knife from his alleged attacker and threw it on the ground.

The 61-year-old, who is only identified as Peter, yesterday recounted the terrifying moment he was robbed by a passenger on Sunday night.

Peter was dropping the man to a Hawkins St address in The Range when the man attacked.

"I don't believe in violence," Peter said.

"I should have stabbed the bastard, but I didn't. I didn't want to hurt him, but he had a knife and he was determined to get money.

"And I was determined to stay alive. We both won."

Peter began driving cabs only 12 months ago and said he'd thought about what he would do in this situation.

"You can prepare for things, but in the end it's fate - I survived."

He also feels if there was more public knowledge about the level of security alerts in taxis, it could lead to less violence against drivers.

"Anyone who does this is a total idiot; there's two or three cameras in most cabs," he said. "Every time a door opens or closes, or a driver touches the brakes, four or five still photos are taken.

"Anyone who gets into a cab is getting their photo taken a dozen times at least... it's a safety issue and photos are only downloaded if there's a request from police.

"There are all sorts of hidden things where the cabbie hardly needs to move and warnings will be sent out to other drivers and police. If people understood this, then maybe some of this stuff wouldn't happen."

A 27-year-old man handed himself into police in relation to the offence on Monday.

He appeared in the Rockhampton Magistrates Court yesterday, charged with one count of robbery with actual violence.

Due to a history of failing to appear, his bail application was refused.

He was remanded in custody to reappear on January 14.
