Byron band goes No.1

BEN Gordon, Luke Kilpatrick, Jeff Ling, Winston McCall and Jia O'Connor.

Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson.

To some this may appear to be a list of random names - 10 names, two bands, two genres and two very different fan bases.

The names will be immediately recognisable to two sets of people who may never cross paths, those who worship hardcore band Parkway Drive and those who are One Direction fans and possibly a younger generation.

The Byron Bay hardcore band, Parkway Drive has knocked the UK teenage heart-throbs and X-Factor graduates One Direction off the No.1 spot on the ARIA charts.

And, it couldn't have come sooner for the Parkway guys.

"It feels great to finally have a No.1 release," Ben Gordon said from Los Angeles where the guys are recording the follow up to Deep Blue.

"Our last DVD came out a few weeks after Michael Jackson died so we were No.2, our last album was released the same week as Eminem's new album and we got No.2 again, so to debut at number No.1 feels amazing.

"It makes it even better to beat a mainstream boy band like One Direction."

Parkway Drive's DVD, Home Is For The Heartless debuted in the top position after selling 4460 units this week.

On the first day of release the DVD, which follows the guys as they toured 42 countries, went gold with 7500.

The United Kingdom's five-piece equivalent, One Direction's Up All Night: The Live Tour DVD follows the guys on their teenage scream-inducing tour.

The Byron guys are unlikely to appreciate the comparison, but we think there are a few similarities.

Musical genres aside, One Direction could be looking at a mirror in Parkway Drive.
