Butler ends speculation

COUNCILLOR Craig Butler has put an end to recent speculation he will put forward his name as a contender for the upcoming Mayoral by-election.

In a media release forwarded to The Observer, Councillor Butler officially announced he will not be nominating for the Mayoral position in this by-election.

Cr Butler said over the last two weeks there had been considerable speculation as to whether or not he would be a contender for the November 20 Mayoral by-election.

Currently acting Mayor Gail Sellers is the sole nomination.

Cr Butler said he wanted to do the right thing by the community he serves, admitting it was time to put an end to the speculation.

“I am announcing that I will not be nominating for the Mayoral position in this by-election,” Cr Butler’s statement reads.

“Could I sincerely thank all those in the community who have offered me support and encouragement to nominate ... I am humbled by your support.

“The Gladstone region has a great future and I want to play a positive part in achieving the best outcomes for all of our residents throughout this next phase of industrial development that is on our doorstep.”

Constant rumours have surrounded the race for Gladstone Mayor, triggered following the resignation of former Mayor George Creed on September 21 due to ill health.

Numerous names have been bandied around as possible contenders; however, time is fast closing in for nominations to meet the noon deadline on Friday, October 22.

If by close of nominations the Cr Sellars is unopposed, she will take the mayoral position without the need for a poll.
