New year in Mackay brings new businesses

BUSINESS is on the boil in Mackay.

Ringing in the new year, prominent real estate agent Ben Chick is starting his own agency, Explore Property, while growing fitness empire Warrior Performance Centre has expanded to a bigger facility.

The new business buzz has sent a strong message to the community, according to Mackay Region Chamber of Commerce vice-president Kylie Porter.

"There are businesses that are powering ahead," she said.

"When you see something new starting, or see a new venture, it sends a powerful message to others out there that Mackay is still a great place to do business.

"So let's grab it with both hands and run with it."

Warrior Performance Centre owner Luke Goodale said the decision to expand was based on the business's growth projections.

The centre's former premises was 400sq m and the new one is 2000sq m.

However, Ms Porter didn't deny small businesses had faced immense challenges in 2014.

"But small business is never easy," Ms Porter said.

"In 2014 we did the hard work. We trimmed our budgets and looked at the bottom line and had to make hard decisions about costs and staffing levels.

"In 2015 we will see the consolidation of all of that hard work that we have done."
