Bulls' defeat leaves Shield season on the line

CRICKET: The Queensland Bulls' season goes on the line next week after a six-wicket defeat in Adelaide on Tuesday left its Sheffield Shield finals hopes hanging by a thread.

The loss to the Redbacks at Adelaide Oval leaves the Queenslanders in fifth spot on the Shield ladder.

The Bulls will head to Hobart to play the Tasmanian Tigers at Blundstone Arena from March 7-10 needing victory to keep hopes of a top-four spot alive.

Needing a further 120 runs for victory on day four with six wickets in hamd, the home side managed to get home without losing another wicket with Tom Cooper (119no) and Jake Lehmann (78no) putting together a match-winning 187-run stand to take the Redbacks second.

Queensland captain Joe Burns was disappointed with defeat but was proud of the effort.

"They are two very good batters," he said.

"We tried a lot of different plans and I thought the bowlers bowled quite well.

"We walk away from it very frustrated but very proud of the effort all the boys put in."

Despite the loss Burns said he enjoyed his first time skippering Queensland and realised just how tough the job was.

"In particular, being captain there is a big job to do," he said.

"There are a lot of young guys, so it is trying to talk to them about preparation and how to play the game.

"Just trying to get into the Shield final, it's a great challenge and from week to week it keeps you very focused on what you need to do."
