UPDATE: Truckie charged over fatal crash to face court today

What we know:

  • A crash was reported to police on the Bruce Hwy at Koumala about 4.45am today
  • The crash may have involved a truck, which has now been seized by police
  • On arrival a 59-year-old male passenger in the vehicle was found deceased
  • The driver was transported to Mackay Base Hospital with serious injuries
  • The highway re-opened about 1pm

UPDATE Monday, 2.55pm: Police have charged a man this afternoon in relation to a fatal traffic crash at Koumala yesterday.

It will be alleged that at about 4.45am a van was travelling south on the Bruce Highway when a truck travelling behind it has struck the van.

The van has left the road and hit a tree, a 59-year-old male passenger died at the scene.

A truck was subsequently located and seized by police near Rockhampton and a 37-year-old Monkland man, who was allegedly driving the truck, has been charged with one count of dangerous driving causing death.

He is expected to appear at Rockhampton Magistrates Court this afternoon.

 

UPDATE Monday, 10.15am: The 62-year-old man, injured in the car in Sunday's Koumala crash, remains in Mackay Base Hospital in a stable condition.

 

UPDATE Monday 7.30am: A police media spokeswoman said "investigations are ongoing".

She said no one has been charged at this stage.

 

UPDATE 4.40pm: A truck driver in his 30s, suspected of being involved in a fatal car crash at Koumala this morning, has not been charged.

However, police have seized his truck for examination.

Police intercepted the truck at Etna Creek north of Logan before 11.15am this morning.

Both the 59-year-old passenger killed in the crash and the 62-year-old driver were residents of Logan, south of Brisbane.

 

UPDATE 1.30pm: Police are calling on witnesses who saw may have seen the crash at Koumala involving a black Toyota van and Kenworth prime mover towing a flat deck trailer at 4.45am this morning.

District duty officer Brendan Davis urged anyone with information to call Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000.

He also said the driver of a truck seized north of Rockhampton and believed to be involved in the crash,  may have also been wanted by police "in relation to other matters" but did not specify what the other matters were.

The two men who were in the car are not believed to be local.

 

UPDATE 12.45pm: Police have seized a truck and are questioning the driver in relation to the fatal car crash at Koumala this morning.

A police spokesman said the truck had been stopped in the Rockhampton area at about 11.15am.

Police have not yet confirmed it was the truck involved in the car crash or not.

 

UPDATE 11.15AM: A 59-year-old man was killed and a 62-year-old man is in a stable condition at Mackay Base Hospital following a two-vehicle crash at Koumala early this morning.

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokesman said the injuries included chest wounds and a fractured leg.

It is not known where the men are from.

Police are continuing to search for a truck driver believed to be involved in the crash, but which had left the scene by the time they arrived.

They do not yet have a description for the truck.

The Bruce Hwy is still closed as police map the scene, but car drivers have found an alternate off-road route around the crash site.

But truck driver Tony George and caravan tower Val Sweetman weren't game to test the windy road, and had been waiting more than an hour on the Bruce Hwy.

"We're not too worried though. What can you do?" Mr George said.

UPDATE 10am: Police are trying to find the truck driver believed to be involved in the crash, after it left the scene.

Police do not yet have a description for the truck but are investigating.

 

EARLIER: Police are currently at the scene of a traffic crash at Koumala that has left one person dead and another injured.

The crash was reported to police around 4.45am after the vehicle was located crashed into a culvert and tree at the side of the Bruce Highway about 3km north of Koumala.

The passenger was located deceased.

The driver of the vehicle, a man, was taken to the Mackay Base Hospital with serious injuries.

The Bruce Highway is currently closed at the scene with diversions in place for light vehicles only.

Commuters have been told they could be waiting for up to four hours for the highway to clear.

The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating and are appealing for any witnesses to contact Crime Stoppers.

YESTERDAY | The fatal crash comes after a serious two-vehicle crash at Bakers Creek Saturday about 8am.  

A mother and her daughter were hospitalised after the crash.
